Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD) |
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
was first signed at a meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
in 1992. There are 180 signatories to the Convention
today, compromising to carry out action to protect
local and global biodiversity. For this reason the
conferences of the parties are called COPs.
The eighth Conference took place in Curitiba, Paraná
state, Brazil, from March 21st to 30th, 2006. The
priority themes covered were:
- Access and benefit sharing
- island biodiversity.

The Global Invasive Species Programme (www.gisp.org)
acts as the focal point and clearing house of
the Convention on Biological Diversity for invasive
alien species. This means that all discussions
on invasive species should pass through GISP and
that it has a strong role in making Convention
discussions progress and in helping countries
to implement the guidelines agreed to at the conferences
of the parties. |

written to provide a broad vision and general information
on biological invasions at the continental level and
brings examples of several biological
groups (Portuguese). The date when the book
will be launched will be released soon. |
